Takashi Shimizu’s Ju-On: The Curse 2 arrives here in its original 2000 Japanese VHS release. The second of the two direct-to-video V-Cinema entries that launched the Ju-On series, the film returns to the cursed Saeki house as its violent history continues to consume anyone who comes into contact with it. Written and directed by Shimizu, the film stars Yūko Daike, Makoto Ashikawa, Kahori Fujii, Denden, Takako Fuji as Kayako Saeki, and Takashi Matsuyama as Takeo Saeki.
Released by Toei Video, Ju-On: The Curse 2 predates the theatrical Ju-On: The Grudge (2002) and represents the original direct-to-video incarnation of Shimizu’s franchise. Shot for the V-Cinema market with a stark, low-budget aesthetic, these first two films established the fragmented chronology, recurring Saeki curse, and unsettling imagery that would define the later Japanese films and eventually the international Grudge franchise.
