Iron & Silk (1990) is an American drama directed by Shirley Sun and based on Mark Salzman's memoir of the same name. Salzman stars as a young American teacher who travels to China in the early 1980s, where his experiences with martial arts and everyday life lead to an increasingly personal understanding of the country and its people.
The film was one of the earliest American features to be shot extensively in post-Mao China and blends autobiography, cultural observation and martial arts into an unusual fish-out-of-water story. Salzman's real-life experiences studying martial arts and teaching English form the basis of the film.
